Turns out James Cameron isn’t a fan of virtual reality
James Cameron has come out and dismissed the potential of virtual reality technology, explaining that he fails to see a future for it beyond video games.
The director utilized 3D technology to bring Avatar to the big screen, but the filmmaker doesn’t see the same potential in Oculus Rift and appears surprised by the hype surrounding the virtual reality headset.
Speaking at a Wall Street Journal conference panel, Cameron said: "There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly."
"The question that always occurred to me is, when is it going to be mature, when is it going to be accepted by the public at large, when are people going to start authoring in VR and what will that be?
"What will the level of interactivity with the user be other than just ‘I can stand and look around'? If you want to move through a virtual reality it’s called a video game, it’s been around forever."
He rounded the topic off casually stating, "Oculus Rift is fine, it’s got a good display and that sort of thing.”
It’s safe to say that Cameron isn’t exactly a fan of virtual reality; despite saying during a Reddit AMA in April that he was interested in incorporating the tech into his films.
Although at the time he hadn’t used Oculus Rift, so maybe it was the clunky headset get-up that put him off the whole idea.
Either way with or without Cameron, Facebook-owned Oculus VR intends on bringing the tech to the entertainment industry and has already begun optimizing it for film.
